The Silver Wings Arts Program Story

Director, Jocelyn Brown, holds a PhD in theater and is a lifelong educator and writer. Brown has taught a wide range of Arts & Humanities courses at the University of Colorado and the University of Missouri while in graduate school and at Front Range Community College over a 14-year period. Brown has written numerous articles in the arts and entertainment field, as well as the field of arts for senior living, for local publications and is a contributing author to the international reference work Old Stories, New Readings: The Transforming Power of American Drama. Brown’s play, Doors, produced and performed at the University of Colorado and at the Boulder Library through the Library Foundation, was awarded the Zora Neal Hurston Workshop Award for an outstanding new play by a female writer at the New Federal Theatre in Brooklyn, New York, 1993.
The transition into senior care came about when Brown’s mother, Dr. Mildred Brown, who was in the late stages of Alzheimer’s, had come to live in Colorado with her daughter in 2019. It became clear that her mother needed daily creative engagement to enjoy a highquality life as well as hands on care and oversight. In addition to the programs at the local age-well centers, Brown designed daily sessions in visual art, crafts, movement, and music that created regular engaging outlets for her mother and often included Mildred’s peers. The need to create meaningful daytime engagement with supports for adults became evident.
To support her mother’s care, Brown became certified in Dementia care, Advanced Caregiving, Assisted Living Management, and CPR. Combining her background in the arts with senior care led to the development of the Silver Wings Arts Program. Mildred passed away in March of 2025. The last 6 years of her life in Colorado gave her an opportunity to enjoy a rich and creative life with all the supports she needed to participate in daily meaningful activities.
